Catch That Girl, directed by Hans Fabian Wullenweber, is a film from Denmark which follows the story of a young girl who is desperately trying to find the money needed to save her father who has fallen ill with a rare disease. The main character, Ida played by Julie Zangenberg, decides to break into a high-security bank with the help of her two friends Sebastian and Jonas. Throughout the film, the mission that the three are planning is focused through the lens of Ida's pretended love for the two boys, both of whom are interested in her. By the end of the picture some of the emotional trust the boys have in Ida is lost, but neither boy is deeply hurt because the situation is created more by their 'general' wanting of someone than by their really being in love. Ida's character is called into question by her actions—she seems like she is being selfish by playing with the minds of her two friends, but then again, she is doing it to save her father. Director Wullenweber leaves it up to the audience to decide what they think of Ida.
The cinematography in Catch That Girl is some of the best I've seen. For instance, Ida is a rockclimber, following in her father's footsteps, and the shots which show her climbing have such perfect technique that they really makes the audience feel involved. Not only are they close up, but they are focused almost straight up which makes the objects look just as large as they would look to Ida. There is also a chase scene, done towards the end of the movie, where there are perspective shots to create an extremely intense feeling. The speed, size, and proportions are so much easier to understand in a perspective shot that it really adds to the mood.
From the first shot to the last, Catch That Girl is an incredible movie. I feel that it's appropriate for kids of all ages although its probably most enjoyed by the teen and young adult audience.
